Equipment Needed
We can have lessons with a minimum of equipment. Take a look at my online store at the bottom of this page to see my recommendations. Contact me if you have any equipment (or other) questions.
Required
- Computer (desktop or notebook)
- Internet connection (Broadband (DSL, Cable) connection is needed for necessary speed.
- Piano keyboard (electronic or acoustic) placed near computer
Recommended
- Internet MIDI: ($69) When installed on your computer, this software makes a connection between our MIDI keyboards, which means that what I play on my keyboard also plays on yours. The response time and sound is much better than using Skype alone. It is currently available for Macintosh OS X 10.4 or later (i.e. Tiger, and Leopard) and Windows Vista and XP. Internet MIDI can be ordered here.
- MIDI interface: Required if you purchase Internet MIDI- Windows computers only (Apple computers already have MIDI input).
- Webcam: Pointed toward your keyboard.
- Headset: Microphone and speakers connected to computer usually have an echo.
How Do I Get Started?
1. Contact the instructor (Terry Smith) to register and establish a day/time for lesson (or just to ask questions). Technical requirements will be discussed and questions will be answered.
2. Check the Equipment Requirements above and make sure you have what you need. Absolutely required is the Skype Web Conference software (Free), a piano or keyboard, and a book (order above). I will be glad to help you get these things going and operational. Contact me with any questions you have.
3. When you're ready, we will schedule our free introductory session to make sure everything works properly.
4. We will have fun lessons learning to play the piano.
How Online Lessons Work
Having an online piano lesson is easier than you think. You can take one lesson or many. All lessons are 25 minutes long.
Before the Lesson
We will schedule a free introductory session to make sure we can establish a suitable connection and test the experience. Please check the information below for required and recommended equipment.
During the Lesson
At lesson time, I will call your computer via Skype conferencing software program (users must be online and logged on). Skype will allow us to see and hear each other. Internet MIDI software will allow us to to play the other's keyboard in real time.
The lesson will be interactive with short assignments on which to practice. A summary of assignments will be emailed to the student shortly after the lesson. You will also receive access to my Online Learning Center where you can play audio and video files demonstrating the songs you are working on.
Materials for Live Online Lessons
Though I can utilize most curricula for your lessons, I recommend the book, Adult All-In-One Course, which can be ordered below. It is a time-tested, popular curriculum that makes piano playing fun to learn and does not require months of painful scales and difficult reading challenges.
This course comes in three levels and each can last for six to nine months of learning. You can order Level 1 by clicking on the link.
You will also have access to my online learning center with videos and practice tips to help you between lessons.
